Ahead of the launch of The Duo we had a chat with Mara Rosenbauer, part of team womanizer to chat clits, technology and mind-blowing orgasms

Hey Womanizer team! Your products promise to address the “orgasm” gap between men and women. Why do you think there is still such a taboo surrounding the female orgasm? 

In the past, women’s pleasure was never the focus – it was all about the man. This is kind of absurd when you realise that the clitoris is the only human organ whose sole function is pleasure. The fact that there are still few studies which actually investigate female pleasure is proof of this point. Most people are not aware that over 70% of women need to also stimulate their clitoris to reach an orgasm. That’s why Womanizer puts the focus here. We truly believe that every single person regardless of sex, gender, physical and mental ability, race or any other condition has the right to sexual self-determination. 

Your toys are innovative and exciting and aren’t designed on the fallacy of male genitalia (which is often the case with traditional toys!) Was the focus on alternative stimulation for Womanizer a conscious choice? 

The Womanizer was invented in Lower Bavaria, Germany by Michael Lenke and his wife Brigitte. Michael is a serial inventor who successfully developed many devices and technologies in all sorts of industries. When he discovered how many women have difficulty experiencing an orgasm, he went out to try to solve the problem. In his research, he realised that most of the sex toys focused purely on vaginal stimulation, but most women only experience clitoral orgasms. Hence, he started working on the technology. It took him more than two years until he finally developed the Pleasure Air Technology™, the first touchless stimulation of the clitoris. 

The team are really passionate about empowering women and celebrating their pleasure, recently holding an event in London, with the Desert Flower Foundation. The talk aimed to challenge taboos and advocate healthy lifestyles. Can you tell us more about this event? Is it important for Womanizer to be more than just a brand, and instead a movement? 

As you said correctly, our mission at Womanizer is so much more than just our products. We want to empower women to own their pleasure and we want to break down stigmas. Our goal at Womanizer is to give women worldwide the right to sexual self-determination. Therefore we are supporting the Desert Flower Foundation, a charity which aims to stop FGM worldwide and help the victims of this practice. Female genital mutilation is a difficult subject and at first glance may not fit our brand and products. However, we are convinced that companies must be committed to developing society in a positive and sustainable way. With this partnership, we have the opportunity to do even more and make a real difference to women’s lives. Events like the one in London in March are perfect for engaging in discussions and bringing up topics that need to be discussed, but are often pushed out of mainstream discourse.

You’re just about to launch the Womanizer DUO. What was it about this toy that surpassed the developmental stages to be up for grabs to us at the end of March? 

At Womanizer we have a global tester pool including various people of different ages and life stages. The DUO was launched after a thorough development process which included 140 testers and also responded to the numerous reviews of the DUO’s predecessor model, the “InsideOut”. The DUO works for women in two ways: while the clitoris is massaged by gentle air vibrations using Womanizer’s innovative Pleasure Air™ Technology, the vibrator also stimulates the G-spot and vaginal area. Compared to classic rabbit vibrators, the product is extremely flexible, which means it adapts to the anatomy of each user, keeping in contact with each person’s individual “hotspots” to give a really personalised experience. The Smart Silence functionality of the DUO ensures that the product only starts stimulating when it is in contact with the skin. 

The feedback we had from many women was that they enjoyed the feeling of being “full” in addition to clitoral stimulation (even though most women have clitoral orgasms). So the DUO product was produced as a response to this. 

How do you keep on top of technological advances in the toy industry to ensure that Womanizer is always at the forefront of innovation? 

Innovation is at the core of the Womanizer brand. We are always investigating new trends and movements. Here in Berlin, we have an entire team who are only responsible for innovation and our own laboratory so that our tech colleagues can immediately realise their ideas. Understanding the needs of women is the focus for us. We listen to their feedback and create surveys which give us a holistic overview on the preferences and desires of women – and couples. We do a lot of market analysis, monitor trends and react accordingly. We try to cover all the different circumstances of women and allow them access to their own sexuality. 

Do you have a favourite toy in the collection? 

For me, each Womanizer product is right for particular moments. The Womanizer Premium is really exciting and I really like the “autopilot” function. For me, the experience is comparable with the feeling of weightlessness. The functionality changes the stimulation in a harmonious way again and again and so surprises the user. So the orgasm is slowly built up and feels more intense without the user having to control the stimulation levels. However, when traveling, the Womanizer Liberty is perfect because it is really discreet and small.  

Which of your toys do you recommend for solo play and which one would you recommend for couples? 

For solo play, any Womanizer model can be used. If you like the dual stimulation, definitely try out the DUO. For couples, again all the toys can be used. However if the couple wants to use the Womanizer during penetration, the Womanizer Premium works well as it is quite flat so fits along the body, doesn’t take up that much space and the Smart Silence tech means the toy stops automatically when you stop using it, so no fiddling around to turn off the toy in the middle of sex. Others go for the Liberty because it is one of our smallest models so can be used without getting in the way.
